Dubai or Abu Dhabi: Where Should You Book Your Schengen Appointment?

Dubai and Abu Dhabi do not share one Schengen appointment calendar. Each destination country decides where UAE residents can submit an application, and the answer is not the same for every country.

Check the official destination-country page before you choose a centre. A shorter drive or an earlier date does not help if that centre cannot accept your application.

Your residence emirate is not the only factor

Applicants often assume that a Dubai resident must use Dubai and an Abu Dhabi resident must use Abu Dhabi. Some destinations do divide applicants by jurisdiction. Others accept UAE residents at either centre. A few currently use only one city for a particular application route.

The provider's booking calendar does not settle the question. A website may display a centre that handles another visa type, another nationality, or a premium submission service. The embassy or government visa page is the stronger source.

When both centres are allowed

If the official page lets you use either city, compare the complete trip rather than the appointment date alone.

Consider:

• how soon the appointment is available;
• the time and cost of travelling to the centre;
• whether every family member can attend;
• the centre's submission and passport-collection hours;
• whether courier return is available; and
• whether you may need to return to correct a document or collect your passport.

Availability in Dubai and Abu Dhabi can differ because the calendars are separate. An open date in one city does not imply that the other city will release the same dates.

When only one centre is listed

Use the centre stated on the current official page. Do not book a different city based on an old guide or a comment from someone whose visa category differs from yours.

France is a useful example. Older pages and forum posts refer to submission arrangements in Dubai, but the current France-Visas UAE page directs residents to VFS Global in Abu Dhabi. Current government instructions take priority over an older search result.

Check the centre before paying

Before you pay for an appointment or optional service, confirm all four items:

1. The page is linked by the destination's embassy or government visa site.
2. The centre accepts your place of legal residence.
3. The appointment category matches your purpose and length of stay.
4. The applicant name and passport details are correct.

Optional services do not expand a centre's jurisdiction. A premium lounge, courier service, or form-filling service also does not improve the consulate's assessment.

Can you apply outside the UAE?

As a general rule, apply in the country where you are legally resident. The European Commission says that applications normally go to the consulate with territorial responsibility for the applicant's legal residence.

If you want to apply in another country, check whether the relevant consulate accepts applications from non-residents and whether you can justify applying there. Do not assume that a tourist visit to another country makes you eligible to submit there.

What if your preferred centre has no dates?

First, check whether the other UAE centre is officially permitted for your destination. If it is, search that calendar as well. If it is not, wait for an appointment at the authorised centre.
